전통사회의 최고 이념이 삼강오륜이었듯이 자본주의 사회의 가장 신성한 표어는 “자유”다. 우리는 통상적으로 자본주의 이전의 인류나 자본주의 세계체제 “바깥”, 즉 북한과 같은 사회들에서 사는 “불행한 이들”과 달리 우리야말로 자유를 누린다고 자부한다. 이 “자유”의 내용이란 무엇이냐 따져보면 자본주의 세계 구성원은 “선택권”이라고 답하곤 한다. 즉, 몇 개의 정당 중에서 하나를 선택할 수도 있고 직업을 스스로 택할 수 있다는 이야기다. 그렇게 답하는 사람에게 대중적 정당 중에서는 자본주의 체제의 철폐를 실천하려는 당이 있는가, 그리고 선택이 가능한 직업 중에서는 자본주의적 고용관계나 시장적 거래와 무관한 직종이 몇 개나 되는가를 물어보면 이 질문의 뜻이 무엇인지 모를 사람은 많을 것이다. 체제 안에서의...
